Balancing Modern Pieces with Vintage

To avoid a room looking shopped for, mix in the found with the new to create a space that feels lived in. Not to mention, thrifting is the more sustainable option and sometimes you have to thrift in order to find those dime in a dozen pieces that are so unique and you’ll treasure forever. My mom always taught me to never buy furniture new, buuut sometimes you want that new-new and that’s okay!

Furniture is one of those things that if it’s well made with good materials, can last for decades. Take a wood credenza for example, even when it starts to get scuffed or banged up, you can either sand and restain it and it can look brand new or maybe those little scuffs don’t bother you because they give it character (just like us!).

New items tend to be more disposable, and what I mean by that is that they tend to act as more of a placeholder until you invest in the pieces you’ve really got your heart set on. I have yet to find an entry table I love, but needed something to act as our landing pad for our keys. So I went with this modern glass entry table, but to tie in that modern piece I’ve added some vintage accent candlesticks and textural bound books.

Depending on your taste and style, you could go with 75% thrifted and 25% new, or at least something around there.

Remember that designing your space takes time and is an evolution of you. So don’t rush the process, it’s all about the journey of collecting pieces that speak to you and bring you joy.
